Artist Statement

I am attracted to the nuances of painting.  Each composition is a chance to create a remote and isolated experience that can exist independent of popular discourse.  My work combines the elements unique to the traditional, modern, and post-modern modes of painting.

There is little attempt made to hide the construction of the paintings surface.  The rough handmade quality of the work reinforces the idiosyncratic climate of the paintings.  The perforated, modular panels suggest syntax as well as elevate the dichotomy of space relations.  Throughout the work there is a play between the real and the implied.

The images themselves are derived from a personal mythology that is informed by social commentary and fueled by a desire to rearrange historical information.  The figure/ground relation is heavily influenced by the shallow space of Elizabethan Theater and the animated quality of puppetry.  Lately, I have begun to see each painting as a play in one act, constructed and deconstructed along a system of semiotics.  Method becomes narrative and multiplicity becomes the plot.
