Vlepo Gallery is pleased to present new works by artist Bedel Tiscareño. Culling from various strands of history, mythology, and urban culture, Tiscareño’s paintings celebrate the rich history of the Mexican diaspora as conceptually organized in a journey between the Mexican border city of Juarez and an ideal of a city known as Jauja. Jauja, known for its idyllic quality of life, is sometimes equated with the U.S. by the northbound Mexicans who have left their towns in search of jobs and better economic conditions. He has physically manifested the fusion of past and present into panels of imagery relating a sometimes uncomfortable juxtaposition of consumer society’s visual detritus with the Corridos also known as Mexican traditional stories that often romantically detail heroic actions of brave individuals who defy authorities in defense of their rights. Aligned with past balladeers, Tiscareño uses an abstract "Frontera" (geographically the border between Mexico and the United States) as a background for his series of multi-paneled, mixed-media paintings. |
