WINDFLOW works by Yoko Motomiya July 5th – July 31, 2005
VLEPO Gallery presents WINDFLOW a solo show featuring the works of artist Yoko Motomiya. Her silk screened prints and installations are influenced by the aesthetics of technologies past present and an imagined future. Ms. Motomiya prints on surfaces ranging from traditional paper forms to vellum, vinyl and tile. The pieces stand alone or aggregate into clusters revealing a highly aestheticized approach to interior environments.
WINDFLOW runs from Tuesday, July 5th to Sunday, July 31st. Opening reception is Saturday, July 9th 3-6pm

Artist Statement
Defining and challenging creativity as we know it, thriving on networks that span the entire artistic process, I am trying to negotiate conceptual territory that is uncharted. The idea of what we categorize as an art form has become vague now. I believe a new mood is in the air, something that's not totally definable yet. Beyond using technology, design and scientific ideas for my art, I want to find a new world spatially and shape my work for the future. In othe my work and my thinking, I have been interested in the sybiotic relationship between technology and life form. So I have tried to explore the term of cybernetic organism in my work. By definition, cybernetics is the science of communication and control. Cybernetic communication means communication between humans, but I would like to advance it to the range of other organic and even non-organic life forms, such as plants, stars, and even daily use products; some industrial materials like plastic, tile and vinyl also have certain qualities for me, because these carry for me some kind of futuristic idea. I want to describe the kind of energy of each vocabulary and to express a different term of communication. Beyond this communication of scientific idea and art, I want to find a new world of space feeling which I myself have never seen. It will be my term of projection into space and future. |
